Last week, following the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit held Feb 10-11 in Paris, more than 60 countries- including Canada and the Vatican– signed an international pact pledging to develop AI in a way that is ethical, open, transparent, and safe; the U.S. did not sign.
Ahead of the summit, Pope Francis released a document titled Antiqua et Nova, outlining the Church’s position on the relationship between AI and human intelligence, and how AI should be used. The Holy See has been proactive regarding the ethical aspects of AI for several years, and the Pope expresses his ethical and anthropological concerns in this document, which compliments the Holy Father’s Message for the 2024 World Day of Peace and his speech at the G7 session on AI in June of last year.
