The expression that gives the 2024 World Day its theme is taken from the Book of Sirach; in seeking wisdom from his prayers, Ben Sira himself discovered that the poor hold a privileged place in God’s heart. Pope Francis says “No one is excluded from His heart, for in His eyes, we are all poor and needy”, and goes on to note that today’s mentality asks that we make a name for ourselves “at any cost”, but “Happiness cannot be acquired through trampling on the rights and dignity of others”. He concludes his message by explaining that prayer is verified by authentic charity- “If prayer does not translate into concrete action, it is vain…”.
