...it signifies the point at which we start consuming resources faster than the planet replenishes them. This year we passed Overshoot Day on August 2nd. Catholic teaching emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship as an integral part of our faith; in his encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis calls on all people of goodwill to recognize the interdependence of humanity and nature, reminding us that caring for the Earth is not just an ecological issue but a moral and spiritual imperative. Earth Overshoot Day serves as a poignant reminder of the impact that human activities have on the environment. At the heart of environmental stewardship lies the understanding that the Earth and everything in and on it are creations of God, thus possessing inherent dignity and value, deserving of our reverence and protection. As Catholics, we are called to recognize our part in contributing to environmental impacts and climate change, and to take responsibility for changing our actions; this includes promoting renewable energy, reducing waste, supporting eco-friendly practices, and advocating for responsible policies. During this year’s Season of Creation, you can join the Laudato Si’ Movement in praying for climate justice, and taking action by sharing those prayers with political leaders. Let us unite in prayer and action, trusting in God’s grace to guide us in becoming better stewards of His creation. For more information, please visit www.laudatosimovement.org/season-of-creation/.
